Gabriel Quezon Avanceña has been in the field of addiction for the past 18 years. He began his career as a volunteer Primary Counselor and also as a Clinical Assistant in a private high-end treatment facility called New Beginnings Foundation from 2000 to 2003. He handled individual counseling, group therapy, multi-family therapy and couples counseling. In 2003, he wanted to work for the less fortunate and experience the impact of drugs in the socio-economic level, which led him to volunteer as Primary Counselor in a government-run facility called Muntinlupa Renewal Homes from 2003 to 2009.
From there, he wanted to widen his experience and decided to work for another treatment facility called Family Wellness Foundation Inc. from 2008 to 2009. This new role included facilitating group counseling among family and dependents as well as conducting case conferences and preparing treatment plans. As a representative of the organization, he was tapped to train in Tokyo, Japan to work with a Japanese organization, Asia Pacific Addiction Research Institute. His main goal was to establish Recovery Meetings in the poor communities of Metro Manila from 2009 to 2012.
From this point forward, he decided to go into Intensive Outpatient and Treatment Counseling. Since 2012 until now, he sees clients and their families privately for outpatient counselling. In 2014, with the help of Living Free Foundation, he pursued his credentials as a Certified Addictions Professional (ICAP) and Recovery Coach (RC) with the Colombo Plan International Centre for Credentialing and Education of Addictions Professionals based in Colombo, Sri Lanka. In 2017, he became a Certified Recovery Specialist (CRS) from Namseoul University in Namseoul, Korea. In addition to this, he was a TV Host for a Drug Awareness Program and has done talks and lectures in international schools and civic organizations. At present, he is also involved with the Local Government of Navotas City handling their Community-Based Drug Program. He recently completed his Post-Graduate Diploma and Executive Master’s Degree with Emeritus Addiction Studies and the Asian Metropolitan University in Malaysia.
